The Department offers both full time and part-time PhD programs and students are admitted twice a year. Students with Masters or Bachelors degree in relevant disciplines with either CSIR/UGC/GATE qualifications can apply.

Structure-property correlations in materials; Micro and Nano-scale mechanical behavior of materials; Auxetic materials (Negative Poisson's ratio), Failure analysis; Fracture mechanics Functionally graded materials; Nanomaterials; Phase transformations; Transformation plasticity; Porous materials; Lattice materials; Shape memory alloys; Amorphous materials; Severe plastic deformation; Electron microscopy; Materials characterization; Processing, characterization of light-weight metals and metal matrix composites; 3D printing; High-entropy alloys; Nano-scale friction and wear behavior of materials; In situ microscopic study of mechanical and tribological behavior.
Polymers Synthesis and modification; Rheology and Processing of Polymers; Polymer Blends and Alloys; Fibre / Particulate Filled Thermoplastic / Thermoset Composites; Block Copolymers; Mechanical Thermal and Morphological properties of Polymer; Photodegradable Polymers; Polymer nanocomposites; Smart and High performance Polymeric materials; Synthesis of conjugated organic materials; Olefin Polymerisation Catalysts; Deformation and Fracture of Polymers and Composites; Biodegradable Polymeric materials for drug delivery and packaging applications; Surface Engineering using controlled radical Polymerization, Polymer based Biomaterials; Functional materials and membranes for water, energy and electrochemical processes.

Funding for ongoing projects comes from IIT as well as from major sponsoring agencies like DST, DBT, CSIR etc. as well as from industry.
